Brock Heerdt

Brock graduated in 2008 and attended San Diego Christian College and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. He is currently 28 years-old.

“After my senior season at San Diego Christian, I signed a professional baseball contract and made a lifelong dream of playing professional baseball come true,” shared Brock. After blowing out his elbow, his playing career came to an end. “I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do,” shared Brock. “Ever since I was 3-years-old, all I wanted to do was play professional baseball; I had essentially placed ‘all of my eggs in one basket.’ Once I finished my pity party and started working on figuring out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I remembered the role Coach Moss played in my life. Both Coach Moss and Franchimone were two of the very few people that knew what was really going on in my life and were there with me each step of the way, offering Godly counseling, encouragement, and when I needed it and a kick in the butt.”

Now that his playing career was over, Brock wanted to be able to be a Moss or Franchimone to help as many kids as possible, so he decided to begin coaching. “After a year of being a JV Coach at Heritage Christian High School in Northridge, I took over as the Varsity Head Coach and actually coached my first game against Coach Moss and Coach Franchimone, which was by far one of the coolest experiences I have had,” said Brock. “I coached at Heritage for three years before going to Taft High School as the Pitching Coach and was fortunate enough to learn from an amazing coach and fellow believer Mike McNeely. After one season at Taft, during the summer of 2017, I was offered and ultimately took over as the Head Baseball Coach at Grace Brethren High School in Simi Valley, CA. The opportunity to mentor young men from a Christian perspective, using the game of baseball, has been an absolute blessing. We serve a great and sovereign God, and I could not be more thankful that He chose a different path than the one I drew for myself.”

Brock was a “lifer” at SCCS, attending K-12. “During my time there I had the opportunity to learn from and develop relationships with some of the most incredible, God-fearing people I have had the privilege of knowing,” said Brock. “While many people had a hand in helping me grow as a Christian, a student, and an athlete, there are a few in particular that will always stand out to me. Mrs. Banke was my third grade teacher and played a significant role during one of the toughest times in my life. This is a friendship I still hold close to my heart and will be forever thankful for her grace, love, mentorship, and understanding.”

Mrs. Wyllie also helped to encourage and mentor him during a rough patch and made one of his least favorite subjects at the time (English/Writing) a passion.

“I will be forever thankful that SCCS gave me the opportunity to speak to Coach Moss in chapel during his last days at SCCS, as he ultimately was one of the men that helped bring me to the Lord, and I became a true Believer,” shared Brock. “I remember being in elementary school and begging him to start an elementary baseball team and always talking during PE about how I could not wait to play for him once I got into high school. Mr. Moss has played and will continue to play a significant role in my life, first as a teacher, then as a coach and father figure, and now as a friend.”

Ultimately, the Lord knew Brock needed someone in his life that would understand him and show him that through the Lord, there is light at the end of the tunnel. “Mr. Franchimone has discipled me for the last 14 years and has become one of my best friends now and has allowed me the opportunity to work with his son Ryan who is now playing baseball at my alma mater, San Diego Christian (Go Hawks!),” shared Brock. “I want to give a huge thank you to Mike and his wife Christina for being an incredible blessing and allowing the Lord to use them in my life. My sister and I both grew up at SCCS and without the Godly mentorship, encouragement and the amazing people we spent those 13 years with, we simply would not be who we are, or where we are, today.”

Brock is grateful for the relationships and the community he had at SCCS. Currently, Brock attends Higher Vision Church and The Rock Church Online.
