November is a busy time for SCCS seniors as they prepare to submit their college applications. The deadline for CSU and UC schools is today, November 30th and students are excited to be finalizing their applications. “We are working on finalizing applications and reading essays to make sure everything is adding up and the students are presenting themselves in the best way possible,” said SCCS College Counselor, Mervatte Gunther.
Many of our seniors also apply to colleges via the common application, a general online application that students can submit to multiple colleges and universities. “Most Common Application deadlines are in January, which allows students to organize themselves and take a little break after the November 30th deadline for UC and CSU schools,” shared Mrs. Gunther. Some universities and colleges, like The Master’s University, Cal Baptist, and Liberty, will make early selections. Several SCCS seniors have already received acceptance to these schools.
Moreover, colleges desire well-rounded students. “Our students have a wide variety of extracurricular involvement to choose from beginning in ninth grade,” shared Mrs. Gunther. “These activities are usually a great indicator of how successful a student will be in college and how they’ll manage their time while giving back to their communities.

Our seniors have been involved in research, fund raising, sports, volunteer opportunities, and clubs on campus such as: SLC- Student Leadership Council, CSF-California Scholarship Federation, FBLA- Future Business Leaders of America, Debate Team and the JPL Invention Challenge, to name a few. All that put together makes our students stand out.”
Additionally, a number of seniors this year will transfer to college with some college credits already completed. “Many of our seniors have taken college courses and dual credit classes, to get ahead. One of our seniors was able to complete 65 transferrable college units in AP, Dual Credits and college courses,” said Mrs. Gunther.
As our seniors meet the many impending deadlines that are upon them in the coming months, all will continue to build their resumes and stay focused on maintaining and increasing their GPAs.
